New #RespectTheCreators Campaign Demands Proper Credit for Electronic Music on Social Media

The music industry is taking a stand with the launch of the #RespectTheCreators campaign, addressing the long-ignored issue of giving credit to artists whose tracks are played in social media content.

Supported by industry leaders, including the Association for Electronic Music (AFEM) and legendary DJ Richie Hawtin, this initiative urges DJs, promoters, and social platforms to tag and credit the music used in live event footage and promotional posts.

In an era where clips of DJ sets and festivals dominate social feeds, the music that sets the vibe often goes unacknowledged. This leaves creators without the recognition they deserve, missing out on vital exposure and opportunities. The campaign aims to establish a new standard across the industry for giving proper credit to the tracks featured in these viral moments.

“Supporting the community that underpins our entire scene is just common decency,” said Richie Hawtin. “Yet, many social media posts from DJs and festivals fail to tag the music being played. It’s disrespectful and hurts the artists who are already fighting for recognition.”

Research shows that as much as 90% of social media content from DJ performances does not properly credit the music. With only 3% of a DJ’s set typically featuring their own productions, acknowledging the work of others is crucial.

The #RespectTheCreators campaign calls on DJs to tag the original artists and list track names in all posts where the music isn’t their own. Promoters and event organizers are encouraged to include track credits in their marketing, while platforms are urged to provide visible tracklists for all DJ sets shared online.

“Tagging producers and crediting songs in social media posts is one of the easiest ways a DJ can show support,” said Ethan Holben, founder of the now-closed DJ revenue-sharing platform, Aslice. “Electronic music culture is rooted in community, and we can push it forward by fostering respect and recognition for the creators. This campaign is just the beginning of a larger movement for equity in the music industry.”

With the backing of major artists and organizations, #RespectTheCreators is a critical step toward ensuring music makers receive the acknowledgment they deserve in the digital age.
